How to do Math Columns

  1. Get a composition notebook of graph or regular lined paper.
  2. Fold the first page in half, and then in half again.
  3. Open the page back up.
  4. Write "2" at the top.
  5. In the first column write:

  • 2 x 0 = 0
  • 2 x 1 = 2
  • 2 x 2 = 4
  • 2 x 3 = 6
  • 2 x 4 = 8
  • 2 x 5 = 10
  • etc.. until you get to 2 x 12 = 24
  • Start over at 2 x 0 = 0
  • repeat until the column is full.

Write one column (working up to one page per day). Once a page is full and the child can repeat what he wrote verbatim, move to 3's and continue on to all other numbers up to 12.

You can also do columns of fact families:

  • 2 x 5 = 10
  • 5 x 2 = 10
  • 10 / 2 = 5
  • 10 / 5 = 2
